General Info
This garcinia species comes from Mexico where it is known locally as limoncillo. It was introduced to fruit growers via Luc Vleeracker.
Growing Conditions
Trees grow very slowly at first and pick up after 2-3 years. Overall growth is still slow however.
The tree appreciates shade in the first few years, after which it can be acclimated into a full sun environment, though it may also thrive in a bright, but indirect, sun location.
The trees are quite hardy. They appear to tolerate both wet and dry conditions, but will likely thrive in well drained soils that receive ample water.
From seed, Mexican garcinia takes about 6-7 years to fruit if well-cared for.
Taste
Called "limoncillo" in its native range in Mexico, this garcinia has a sweet/tart flavor, the tart component being a lemony-citrus flavor. The fruit is quite large and has a good seed to flesh ratio.
Climate
Sub-Tropical to Tropical
Cold Tolerance
It has been reported that small seedlings are able withstand temperatures into the mid 20's F, but it is always a good idea to protect trees from frosts when possible.
Propagation
Mexican Garcinia is often propagated by seed. It appears that there are variations between seedlings. Grafting is possible and may become more popular as high quality varieties become identified.
Seeds have a near 100% germination rate.
