Grafted 'Malacacheta' Jaboticaba
Grafted ‘Malacacheta’ Jaboticaba
These plants are the result of grafting small ‘malacacheta’ scions onto ‘sabara’ jaboticaba rootstocks. The rootstocks are grown in 5” deep plugs, so the plants are quite small. No one in the USA has fruited this variety, so grafted trees or importing seeds from Brazil (which is difficult) are the only way to obtain them. The tree was only discovered in 2010 in Brazil, and so it is quite a new introduction.
Our mother tree was obtained from a grower who was able to source mature ‘malacacheta’ scion wood, and so this small specimen too is a mature ‘malacacheta’.
eBay auctions of this jaboticaba variety have sold in the range of $300-$600. These are smaller plants and therefore priced as such.
Note: Grafted trees retain the named variety’s genetics. In this case, ‘sabara’ jaboticaba will, in time, fruit below the graft union, allowing for 2 varieties to fruit on the same tree. This is really only possible with jaboticaba since they fruit directly on the main trunks and branches.
