General Info
Cola nuts are native to Africa. The nuts, which contain caffeine, have long been used by native peoples as a stimulant, and it still very much used today, especially in west Africa. It is chewed to alleviate fatigue, hunger, and thirst, used ceremonially, socially, and has culinary uses. Muslims consider cola nuts to be sacred and are often used during Ramadan. Cola nuts were originally used as caffeine for Coca-Cola, making up the latter part of the soft drink's name.
Size
Can grow to 60', but is often smaller.
Growing Conditions
Likes wet and humid conditions. Full sun or part shade. Needs water during dry periods. Trees begin making fruits in 12-15 years.
Taste
Seeds are high in caffeine, and are generally chewed or ground into a powder and made into a drink. The taste is initially bitter, but leaves a sweet taste in the mouth that affects other foods consumed afterwards.
