General Info

Cambuca is a relatively unknown fruiting tree, even in its native range in Brazil.

Size

20’ - 40’, but it is slow-growing

Growing Conditions

Cambuca should be kept in partial shade when young, but should go to full sun after they reach 1’ tall. They grow and fruit much better in full sun conditions. They enjoy lots of water, similar to most jaboticabas. They prefer deep, rich, well-drained soils.

Years to Fruit

Rarely, cambuca can fruit in as little as 3-4 years, but his may be only 1 tree in 100. On average, the trees take 6-8 years to fruit, but its not uncommon for some trees to take 10+ years to make fruits. When the trees reach 5’ tall, they can begin flowering/fruiting. When they reach closer to 10’ tall, yields significantly increase.

Taste

The taste of cambuca is described as ‘peach-jaboticaba’ with a well-balanced sweet/sub-acid flavor

Climate

Sub-Tropical. Cambuca comes from a very hot and rainy region of Brazil, but trees are highly adaptable.

Cold Tolerance

Mature cambuca trees are said to be tolerant down to at least 25F.

Propagation

Seeds is the main propagation method. Grafting is possible but is difficult. Air-layers may be possible.

Source

Seeds were obtained from Hawaii
